The packaging design for Sweet Bat Wings is part of a project focused on
creating original and innovative souvenirs for the city of Rijeka. As
the first product in a new line, Sweet Bat Wings aims to introduce users
to one of Rijeka’s many intriguing historical details — the city’s
shortest and narrowest street, affectionately nicknamed “Bat Street.”
This charming, stone-paved, and somewhat mystical alley dates back to
the politically turbulent year of 1867. During that time, advocates for
greater autonomy of Rijeka following its annexation to Hungary would
gather in this narrow, shadowy street. As a result, their political
opponents mockingly called them “i pipistrelli,” the Italian word for
bats.
The packaging design of the bat-shaped cookies reflects this
historical background through its very shape — a pyramidal structure,
with each side revealing different content. The illustration
complements and clarifies the core concept. The box presents this
intriguing historical footnote about the city in two languages,
accompanied by a stylized bat drawing highlighting its distinctive
upside-down perspective.
The unique design and packaging illustration encourage users to
explore a different side of Rijeka — one that goes beyond the usual
tourist attractions and engages with hidden details and points of
interest, often unknown even to Rijeka’s own residents.
The theme of this souvenir inspired the creation of a triangular,
pyramidal packaging shape that brings the bat illustration to life—not
only through its charming design but also through its intended use. This
small box is designed to hang from the ceiling, mimicking the natural
position of bats.
Unlike typical products meant for shelf display, this packaging is
intended to be suspended from the ceiling or other elevated supports,
creating an effect reminiscent of bats hanging in caves. This concept
was showcased during Halloween at a cookie shop, where rows of Sweet Bat
Wings boxes hung from the ceiling, simulating a bat cave and attracting
customers.
