BRANDING, PACKAGING, VISUAL AND VERBAL COMMUNICATION

The Nin Saltworks visual identity project encompassed the design of product packaging, segmentation of product and service categories, and the development of visual communication across all promotional activities. The branding and packaging are rooted in tradition and emotion, reflecting the heritage nurtured by Nin Saltworks for generations — from its hand-harvested sea salt to its time-honored production methods. This authentic legacy served as the foundation for a visual identity that conveys craftsmanship, continuity, and a deep connection to nature.

Nin Saltworks is a traditional salt production site located in the shallow sea lagoon of Nin Bay. Here, the ancient craft of manual salt harvesting has been carefully preserved and passed down through generations of local families. Nin salt is ecological, natural, and medicinal. Its biodynamic nature comes from the harmonious collaboration between human hands, local vegetation and wildlife, pristine beaches, and healing mud. Used daily, Nin salt offers numerous nutritional and health benefits. Each product from Nin Saltworks is handcrafted with care and passion. They are diverse, vibrant, flavorful, and uniquely characteristic, known for their relaxing and healing properties. These core values are at the heart of the brand’s story and communication.

These core values form the foundation of the Nin Saltworks branding project, which includes segmenting their product range into distinct categories—kitchen salt, delicacies, cosmetics, and Fleur de Sel. The project also covers packaging design for these product groups, along with the creation of all promotional materials. A long-standing collaboration with Nin Saltworks has led to successful brand development, strong market positioning, and effective distribution within the niche of healthy and eco-friendly products.

The product identity highlights the core values of Nin Saltworks: manual harvesting and production, deep-rooted tradition, long-standing business history, and the saltwork’s rich heritage. This connection is visually expressed through a blend of historical and contemporary black-and-white photographs showcasing the salt harvesting process at Nin lagoon’s saltpans, capturing moments from past to present. These images are thoughtfully combined with distinctive shapes that signify each product category, making the packaging both meaningful and recognizable:

  • The flower shape represents delicacies, featuring products made with Nin’s Fleur de Sel as a key ingredient.
  • The crystal shape connects packaging to the category of kitchen salts, reflecting the crystalline structure common to all salt varieties.
  • The circle shape symbolizes ecological, natural, and manually harvested salt.
  • The heart shape is reserved for cosmetic products, primarily targeted at women, with packaging design tailored to this audience.

By combining these visual elements and historic photographs, the design creates a contemporary identity that reflects the high quality of Nin Saltworks’ products. All promotional materials emphasize the connection between using premium spices and an improved quality of life, highlighting the benefits of healthy ingredients like Fleur de Sel, ecological products, and natural cosmetics. This branding approach aims to evoke the passion and dedication of Nin Saltworks and its employees, honoring a tradition of manual production preserved through generations. It also pays tribute to the people of Zadar County who have sustained their livelihoods through this craft. A final, powerful symbol portrays salt as the ultimate gift of the sun, the Adriatic Sea, and the Bora wind from Mt. Velebit. The project scope includes developing promotional materials for on-site locations such as the Saltworks, Salt Museum, and House of Salt, as well as various retail outlets (Souvenir Shop, Zagreb Shop, Nin Shop) and annual events like the Salt Festival and Open Doors Days.
